Insomnia and Christmas

Insomnia

noun

habitual sleeplessness; inability to sleep.

Yeah, it gives Proverbs 31:18 “ and her lamp never goes out at night”¬†a whole new perspective. Insomnia can have several contributing factors and ranges from a daily (or nightly) struggle to an incident here or there. Any way it goes though, it’s no fun. Sleep deprivation is no joke. Especially not when you have kids… I am one of the lucky ones in that it’s only an occasional problem for me.

But what do you do in a house with 6 other people (all smugly sleeping) at 2 a.m. ? Can’t clean, do laundry, or organize, and lack of sleep is seriously affecting your blog writing. You plan for Christmas of course!

Insomnia Christmas tips.

  • Since you’re not sleeping you may as well wrap and hide the presents as you get them.
  • Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial. Get free 2 day shipping and if you don’t like, or use, all the benefits you can cancel after 30 days.
  • Keep an organized list of what was bought for whom. Sleep deprivation can make things confusing.
  • Don’t forget to hide the list inside a rarely used coffee mug.
  • Pin this article to Pinterest so you don’t forget where you put the list.

Beastie Christmas list

So far we have yet to set a budget. That’s ok as I’m pretty sure it’s already blown. The Beastie is only getting one gift from us this year. I never know what to get them until they are around 2 or 3. Their favorite things to play with are generally everything they are not supposed to have anyway. I’m really big on letting them be their own people so usually don’t pick out themes and what not for them. Though I admit that I have gone pony happy on her. Vicarious living at it’s best. But she does love wagons. Anything she can ride in is awesome to her. The Monsters have designated her as the resident royalty, so this¬†Step2 Disney Princess Chariot Wagon seemed fitting. All of my Monsters have loved to ride or drive so it’s no real surprise that she does too.

Monster 4 recently acquired this Radio Flyer Deluxe Family Canopy Children’s Wagon and somehow they manage to fight over it despite there being 2 seats. Cuz you know, toys need a seat too. So now we will have 2.

Monster Christmas list

I did score a Super Mario Chess Collectors Edition for MONSTER 1 and even found a UNO Super Mario Game! I can’t wait for him to see them.

Monster 2 got a hot wheels lego thing. I can’t find a link to show you but it is awesome. When we went to LEGOLAND in Atlanta for his birthday he got stuck on the car building race track for hours. Seriously, I had to drag him away to eat lunch. When I found the hot wheels set (with it’s own storage box!!) it seemed like the obvious thing to get him. I am also considering a LEGO Storage Box. Organization matters! Maybe tickets to go back to LEGOLAND are in order too.

Monster 3 doesn’t have anything specifically for him yet. I know. I’ll get to it.

Monster 4 is getting a construction set, a CAT Construction Express Train Set, and a Paw Patrol 12 in a Box 12 Book Set Learn to Read Phonics Age 3 – 7 Years. He loves all things construction, trains, and Paw Patrol.

Group presents

These will go under individual names but are for everyone. I found a Battleship Game Retro Series 1967 Edition. Monster 4 in particular will like it. Blowing up battleships? What boy wouldn’t? We are trying to focus on learning and group activities this year. With 5 kids we have enough toys. They’re getting a microscope and a telescope too. I found a kit that allows them to build their own video games too. And of course I can’t find a link for it. Gr.

Insomnia Sucks.

There’s no way around it. Aside from medication, I don’t know any cures. Some things can help though.

  • De stress. My insomnia always flares up under stress. You can’t avoid all stress but you can minimize it.
  • Limit yourself. I can get caught up in all the things that need to be done at the end of the night. But if you get caught up in them you’re just keeping yourself busy and active. The laundry will still be there in the morning. Or at 1a.m. if you just really can’t get to sleep.
  • Make sure all the things you do an hour before bed are still and mindless. Don’t start organizing photos. Instead you can get the dishes done.
  • Get into a routine. If you do the same things every night it will eventually train your body that it’s time to go to sleep.
